Having your first Pap smear
A Pap smear, also called a Pap test, is a routine screening procedure for cervical cancer. A Pap smear involves collecting cells from your cervix — the lower, narrow end of your uterus that’s at the top of your vagina. It’s recommended once every three years for women starting at age 21.
Having ones first pap smear can be nerve wrecking and uncomfortable, however your doctor is a trained professional and will make the procedure as humane and comfortable as possible. Here are a few things you should consider before having your first Pap Smear.
Before your test
1.Ensure you are not on your period
2.Avoid vaginal intercourse, douching and any vaginal applied medicine for at least 2 days before your screening
3. Dress with easy to remove clothing
4.Shaving is not a must, however ensure you take a shower on that day and your vagina is clean.
Please note: a pap smear does not affect your virginity and can be done even if you are not sexually active as HPV can spread from skin to skin.
During the Examination
1.After undressing, you lay on your back and your legs are suspended in stirrups.
2.The instrument called the speculum holds your vaginal walls apart so your cervix is easily seen by doctor. This procedure does not hurt but will be an odd sensation. Once inserted you will feel a slight pressure but just keep relaxing.
3.An instrument called a spatula scrapping device) will be used by doctor to take samples of your cervical cells from the cervix walls, it does not hurt but has an odd sensation.
4.Samples are collected and transferred and the speculum removed. You are done! Be sure to keep checking with doctor for your results.
Pap smears can help detect early signs of cervical cancer as one may be fine on the outside but the inside tells another story. Early detection is the cure.
